ORCHARD PARK, NY – The Buffalo Bills announced their 2006 schedule today. There are no nationally scheduled games at this time. All regular season games will be played at 1:00pm Eastern Time. This may change, however, as the later nationally televised games of the season (weeks 10 and following) will be determined according to the best matchups at that time. This may move a game later in the Bills’ schedule to the new NBC Sunday Night game.

The Bills will open the regular season on the road against the New England Patriots at 1:00pm on September 10th.

Highlights of the schedule include three December home games (as requested on The Review by Uncle Josh!) against San Diego, Miami, and Tennesee. Also, head coach Dick Jauron will have back to back road games in October against two of his former teams, Chicago and then Detroit.

The bye week falls at week eight, so almost the middle of the season. That is usually advantageous. In addition to the regular season schedule, the pre-season schedule was announced. The Bills will open the pre-season on Saturday, August 12th at the Carolina Panthers.

Hey Bills Fans!

Just wanted you to know the reason for the absence here at the Buffalo Bills Review. Greg here, your BBR webmaster. As we mentioned on the show this month, my wife and I are expecting our 4th baby any day now. (Maybe even today?) So, life has been hectic crazy here with me taking on lots more Mr. Mom duty around the house, and trying to cram in lots of work before I take time off for the new baby. I also am working on two books at the moment! It’s busy.

So, suffice it to say, there has not been time for a bills RunDown.

ORCHARD PARK, NY – In a not-so-surprising move today, the Buffalo Bills parted ways with three veteran players deemed expendable by new GM Marv Levy and head coach Dick Jauron. Sam Adams, Mark Campbell, and Lawyer Milloy all followed first round bust, OL Mike Williams, to the waiver wires.

Sam Adams, the 13 year veteran, fell out of favor with former Bills coach, Mike Mularkey, during the course of the 2005 season. His playing time diminished throughout the year, and so did his play when he was on the field. There was some speculation the Bills would retain Adams, despite his high salary cap impact, due to his great presence in the middle of the line.

Mark Campbell and Lawyer Milloy both joined the Bills in 2003, and contributed to the team over the past three years. Milloy, 32, and Campbell, 30, were showing signs of age last year though as their production levels tailed off through a dismal 5-11 season.

The moves free up around $5 Million under the 2006 salary cap.

The Bills have secured the services of Nate Clements for at least one more year by designating him the Franchise Player. This guarantees him the average salary of the top 5 corner backs in the league. But unless the Bills can sign him to a long-term deal, this would only be good for one year.

Bills standout WR Eric Moulds was offered a deal that would reduce his salary this year, but that was publicly and officially rejected by his agent this past Sunday. Moulds’ agent firmly stated that the receiver will not take a pay cut to stay in Buffalo. The team is expected to release Moulds, though he is currently under contract, due to his nearly $11 Million dollar 2006 salary. Such a move would save the Bills around $5 Million under the salary cap.

Expect more moves from One Bills Drive in the very near future as the free agency period is due to begin this Friday, March 3rd.

OT Mike Williams Released
His official title has always been OT Mike Williams, but by the end of last season, and in the depth-chart published at buffalobills.com (and linked here) last week, he was the third-string LG Mike Williams. Third string. And slated to receive $10.8 Million this year. That’s preposterous. Bills GM Marv Levy thought so as well. The Bills made room in their salary cap – and room on their bench – by releasing their 2002 first-round selection on Thursday.

Williams had definitely come under much public scrutiny after several years of unmet expectations. Being drafted higher than any other Bills player since Bruce Smith in the 1985 draft, there were perhaps unrealistic expectations on this former Texas Longhorn. He was a big man, with “great potential”, but now has joined the list of “big busts” like Tony Mandarich and others.

The move may have been purely financial, creating well over $5M of space in this year’s cap. Or, it could be a purging of the former regime. Williams was a big draft pick from the Donahoe era.

The team continues to state its desire to keep Eric Moulds, despite his similar cap figure. Moulds is the only player left from Marv Levy’s previous stint in Buffalo, as the team’s Hall of Fame head coach. There may be more loyalty there to someone like Moulds, as opposed to Williams.

The purging has begun. Soon the 2006 team roster will begin to take shape through future waivers, free agent signings (as well as losses) and the draft. Time to move on to bigger…

Clements Is The Franchise

He may be brash, over-confident, in-your-face and prone to giving up the big play, but the Bills think Nate Clements is a player to build their franchise around. At least, they think he deserved the Franchise Player tag. Marv Levy and the Bills designated CB Nate Clements as their franchise player this week, guaranteeing him an average of the top 5 salaries for his position in the coming year.

Clements has been a big play maker for the Bills over his past five years here. He leads the team in all-time touchdown returns (defensive and special teams), and has led the Bills in interceptions for the past four seasons. His main drawback is that his aggressive play – which gets him the big play – all too often costs his defense a big play the other way.

Levy has clearly stated that the team wanted to keep Clements, and the franchise tag allows them to do that. Levy also has a history of a strong defense. The team he coached in Buffalo in the 90s is often remembered for its offensive fire-power, but Levy constantly preached that “Defense wins championships.” Signing Clements was his first step in that same direction in his second term with the Bills.

There will be great public debate about whether the Bills should have kept Clements, or let him go. You have heard on the Bills Review several calls for Nate to leave town. Now it’s time to see what this boy can do, and if President Wilson’s money is being spent wisely.

Two New Coaches Join Jauron’s Staff
In what seems to be a weekly part of TheRunDown here, coach Dick Jauron has added more help to his coaching staff. This week, the Bills hired a Linebackers coach as well as an assistant Special Teams coach. Coach Matt Sheldon will take over leadership of the linebacking corp. He comes over from the St. Louis Rams with five years of NFL coaching experience. Cross joins the Bills as their Defensive/Special Teams assistant. He has no prior NFL coaching experience. He was most recently outside linebackers coach for Iowa State University.

No Sooner A Cowboy…
Still No HOF
OK. First order of business. I need to apologize to our wonderful, faithful, and alert BBR readers out there… I made a serious error in last week’s RunDown. Now, cut me some slack. I was writing it hastily at 1:00 in the morning before an early morning departure for a weekend musical performance. I was not researching as much as I usually do, and at 1 in the morning, the whole play on words with the Sooner thing seemed like a good angle on the story. Never mind that it wasn’t true. 🙂 Actually, I really just completely forgot. I knew it was Oklahoma, but I forgot the state part. Now, being a Michigan STATE University alum, I COMPLETELY understand how that error would be appalling. I would never want any of our great athletes to be called Wolverines!!! Ewww!

So, please accept my apologies for such an oversight.

Now, OSU COWBOY Thurman Thomas was passed over for this year’s Hall of Fame class. While it is rare for first-year eligible candidates to be voted in, Thurman did have the credentials to be elected. I’d look for Thurman to have a bust in Canton as early as next year’s HOF class. Still, it would have been nice to see Thurman, with all his NFL accomplishments, be one of the rare exceptions for first-timers.

One of the big deciding factors was probably (unfortunately) the fact that in four tries, Thurman (And the Bills) never won a Super Bowl. There was an article in the Buffalo News this week about Andre Reed’s chances for the Hall of Fame. Obviously a great receiver, and deserving of the honor, but no Super Bowl victory. I do not think this is a legitimate benchmark of who makes the Hall of Fame, and I’m sure there are many players in the Hall who do not have Super victories. However, it seems fairly obvious that the absence of any Super Bowl wins will factor in the decision for players like Thomas, Reed, Steve Tasker, Darryl Talley, etc.

Well, as they say, there’s always next year. (We’re pretty good at saying that in Buffalo, eh?)

Bills Continue Restructuring of Front Office
In an effort to streamline the organization, the Bills continue to revamp and re-organize their front office staff. This week the Bills announced that four current staff have been given the title Vice President. Joe Frandina, with the Bills since 1995, will become the new Vice President of Stadium Operations. Peter Guelli, with the Bills since 1998, will be the Vice President of Business Development. Marc Honan, who joined the Bills in 1997, will be the Vice President of Marketing and Broadcasting. Long-time executive, Bill Munson, who has been with the Bills for 34 years, will become the Vice President of Public Affairs. Previously, Munson’s title was Vice President/Operations. David Wheat, most recently with the Bills since 2003, has been named Vice President of Operations and Ticketing. Wheat also served with the Bills from 1997-2000. And, Scott Berchtold will remain in his position as Vice President of Communications. He has held that position since 1989.

Bills Need To Find a LB Coach… Again
In an interesting turn of events, the Bills new Linebackers Coach is now their old Linebackers Coach. Johnnie Holland, less than a week after he was announced as the Bills new LB Coach accepted the same offer from the Houston Texans. Holland cited personal reasons for this decision.

“It’s an opportunity for me to go back home and be close to my family,” quotes the Buffalo News, in an interview by phone with Holland. “I grew up in the Houston area. My wife grew up in Texas. My parents are getting older. My wife’s mom is getting older, and it’s a rare chance for us to go home.”

So, the coaching carousel continues. Stay tuned for further developments. 🙂

• With the 2005 season officially over (except for the Pro Bowl this Sunday), thoughts turn toward next season. Free agency becomes a primary focus. Who to cut, who to keep. How much cap room will the Bills have to shop for new players? And then there’s the draft. Levy and Polian and Butler always put together great drafts. Can Levy do it again? • BillsInsider.com reports this week that Former Bills OL Mike Devlin has taken a coaching position with the NY Jets. Devlin spent seven seasons in the NFL, mostly with the Bills, and also as a Cardinal. Most recently, he was coaching the Toledo Rockets.

The Team Is Coming Together
Coach Dick Jauron continues to assemble his team of coaching assistants this week. We have seen several new faces come in, a few old faces get some well-deserved recognition, and a few others depart. The drama continues to unfold daily from Orchard Park.

In the departure category, coaches Sam Wyche, Brad Roll, and Jerry Gray all will not be returning to the Bills next season. Gray has had several interviews and finally landed as a defensive coach with the Redskins, joining former Bills head coach Gregg Williams staff there. Wyche was a close friend of Mike Mularkey, and reportedly left in part because of the circumstances in which his friend left the team.

A few coaches were given new titles, like Special Teams coach, Bobby April. He now carries the title Assistant Head Coach. April was one of the candidates for the job given to Dick Jauron. April has been with the team a long time, and the Special Teams unit has consistently been one of the best in the league. It is a well deserved honor. Chuch Lester was also given a similar honor. He is also an Assistant Head Coach. Lester has been with the Bills for over two decades. Also, John Allaire was promoted to the Strength and Conditioning Coach.

Some of the new faces include new Defensive Coordinator, Perry Fewell. Fewell is a relative newcomer, but comes over from Chicago as part of Jauron’s former staff. New LB Coach, Johnny Holland was also with Jauron as a member of the Detroit Lions coaching staff. The Bills also hired George Catavolos as the new Defensive Backs coach, and Larry Zierlein as assistant Offensive Line Coach. Most of the new hires have a wealth of coaching experience, including Zierlein’s 35 years of coaching experience.

Let’s hope this transfers to a well coached team on Sundays in the fall.

Thurman Thomas Awaits An Unlikely First-Time Entry To The Hall Of Fame
This Sooner is hoping his entry into football’s Hall of Fame comes sooner than later. Former Oklahoma Sooner, and beloved Buffalo Bill will find out this Saturday at 2:00pm if he will beat the odds and be chosen as a first-year eligible member of the Hall of Fame.

Thomas certainly has the numbers. He finished in the top 5 or 10 overall in rushing yards, yards from scrimmage. He is second only to Jerry Rice in playoff yards from scrimmage. He led the league in that category for several straight seasons. Named league MVP in 1991. Thurman was a complete back. There’s no doubt he will end up in Canton.

But will it be this year?

“Eventually it will happen, I guess,” he said from his home in Orlando, Fla. “I’m not counting on it this year. You know me. It’s not something I will be mad about if it doesn’t happen. It’s out of my hands. I have no control over it. It’s great to make it to the final 15. If it happens the first year, that will be great. If it doesn’t, I hope it will happen soon.”

Buffalo fans will be rooting for #34 this weekend. He has made the wall of fame, and is certainly deserving of the Hall of Fame honors as well. We’ll see this Saturday if he will break tradition and join the likes of Joe Montana and Walter Payton as first-time eligible recipients of football’s greatest honor.

I’d Like To Introduce…
When the announcement was made this week that the Bills had selected Dick Jauron as their new head coach, there was no shortage of “second opinions”. Most people have felt that there were several better options for the new head man, and have voiced their opinion accordingly.

Bills’ GM Marv Levy and owner Ralph Wilson, who have named themselves Buffalo’s “Golden Boys”, are under some fairly intense public scrutiny after passing up coaches like Mike Sherman, who has a very impressive record as a head coach, and local favorite, Jim Haslett. Levy said in a press conference this Monday, “You can’t just look at the win/loss record.” That may be true, but at the moment, all Bills’ fans want is a better won/loss record. The fans are tired of losing.

To Jauron’s credit, he comes in here knowing the situation, and seems to have a plan to correct it. He plans to work with the personnel who are here, optimizing an offensive and defensive scheme around them, instead of coming in with a new plan that all the players must fit themselves into. He also plans to assemble a team of assistant coaches with NFL experience who can have free reign over their designated area.

In addition to his plans for the team, he is aware that there will be a higher degree of public scrutiny of his work than normal, due to a string of seasons in Buffalo with no playoff wins or even appearances. Jauron said one big thing he learned from his last head coaching experience with the Chicago Bears from 1999-2003 was, “You just need to win.”

Fan reaction has been fairly strong to this selection, as evidenced by a comment left on a recent post here at the BBR. The Drake has recommended a visit to www.firedickjauron.com. And our weekly poll asks the question, “What do you think of the new head coach?”, offering you a chance to voice your opinion.

However the Bills arrived at this decision, it is now history. Jauron is the new head coach of the Buffalo Bills, and he is assembling his team of assistants. Here’s hoping a coach “in the mold of Marv Levy” can bring the Bills back to the winning ways we have known from the 90s, and perhaps even end the winless drought in the Super Bowl!

Bills Hire Assistant Coaches
The Bills announced this week the hiring of two assistant coaches following the selection of the new head coach. Steve Kollar was named the Bills new Defensive Line coach, and Steve Fairchild was hired as the new Offensive Coordinator. Both men were most recently assistant coaches with the St. Louis Rams. Kollar replaces Tim Krumrie, and has an impressive 17 years of NFL coaching experience. He also played defensive line with the Bengals and the Buccaneers for 8 years.

Fairchild has been the offensive coordinator for St. Louis for two years under head coach Mike Martz. Running the “The Greatest Show on Turf”. Before Mike Mularkey resigned as Bills coach, he was pursuing Fairchild for the role of Offensive Coordinator. Fairchild began his NFL coaching career in 2001 as the Buffalo Bills running backs coach under then head coach Gregg Williams. He is excited to return and being his new role with the Bills.

The Bills are seeking to hire Green Bay assistant Jim Bates as their new Defensive Coordinator, though no official decision has been made there.

Another Bill is Headed to the Pro Bowl
This week AFC Pro Bowl coach Mike Shanahan seleceted Bills’ long snapper Mike Schneck as his “need player” for his Pro Bowl roster. Schneck will join his teammate, Punter Brian Moorman on the flight to Hawaii. The two will be the teams only representatives in the Pro Bowl this year, despite some fans thinking LB London Fletcher and CB Terrence McGee were deserving of the honor as well.

ORCHARD PARK, NY – The Bills today announced the hiring of Dick Jauron as the 14th head coach in the history of the Bills franchise. At a 2:30pm press conference, owner Ralph Wilson, GM Marv Levy, and Jauron all addressed the media, excited about the possibilities ahead. Jauron was a member of the Bills coaching staff as a defensive backs coach in 1985, his first year coaching in the NFL. He returns 21 years later with his most recent head coaching experience as the interim head coach in Detroit. Jauron took over in December for former Lions coach Steve Mariucci.

In 2001, Jauron was the AP Coach of the Year with the Chicago Bears, with a 13-3 record that year. The Bears had not been to the playoffs for 7 years before that, nor even had a winning season for 6 years before that.

Ralph Wilson joked about Jauron’s college background. He is a Yale grad and Hall of Famer Marv Levy, now Jauron’s new boss, is a Harvard grad. Traditionally, those alum do not fraternize. There may be an exception in this case.

The press asked several questions about what Jauron intended to do with JP Losman and the unstable QB position with the Bills. Jauron’s response was, “Every position we have will be open to competition.” He also said the first thing they will do is to assemble the coaching staff. After that, they will build a scheme around the players who are currently here, and those whom they will bring in.

When Levy was asked how they selected Jauron over Mike Sherman, who has an outstanding 53-27 record as a head coach in the NFL. Levy replied, “Record alone does not tell it. There are many more factors involved.” Levy repeated that of all six candidates that were interviewed, Jauron was the best for the head coaching position. Levy mentioned that when he came to Buffalo, he had a losing record as a head coach. The Buffalo News quoted Bill Polian as saying that Jauron was a coach very much in the mold of a Marv Levy. The Bills are hoping that is the case. You can never have enough Hall of Fame coaches.

Levy mentioned that both he and Wilson arrived at a consensus on this selection. They, “discussed all of the options, and everything seemed to point to Jauron,” said Levy.

Time will tell whether this is the man who will help turn around a franchise who has been absent from the playoffs for so long. But as of today, for better or worse, the Bills head coach is Dick Jauron.

Welcome to the first edition of “The Rundown”. This will be a weekly feature on the Buffalo Bills Review website where we’ll collect some of the headlines from One Bills Drive from the week, and offer our take on the latest Bills’ news.

Coaching Carousel
Obviously, with the news of Mike Mularkey’s resignation, the Bills have been hard at work interviewing head coaching candidates. So far they have interviewed:

• Dick Jauron (Article)
• Mike Sherman (Article)
• James Lofton (Article)
• Dom Capers (Article)

The talk around this area is mostly bewilderment at the Bills not interviewing either Ted Cottrell or Jim Haslett, two coaches with ties to the organization. Personally, I’d like to see either guy in here. Ted was a great defensive coordinator here, and Jim Haslett has said before that he’s wanted to coach here for the Bills. It’s uncertain why the Bills have chosen not to interview those two guys.

As for the coaches they have brought in here, it seems Mike Sherman might be the best candidate with not only an impressive record as a head coach at Green Bay (53-27), but he also has some experience as a General Manager, which might be beneficial as the new Bills GM is lacking there. He has had some experience in a similar role in the CFL with Montreal, but not in the NFL. Dick Jauron was head coach for the Chicago Bears from 1999-2003, during which he was awarded the Associated Press Coach of the Year award (2001). Most recently he took over the interim head coaching job in Detroit when the Lions fired Steve Mariucci. Jauron also has Buffalo ties as he was the Bills’ defensive backs coach in 1985.

James Lofton is currently the receivers coach with the San Diego Chargers. There is speculation within the local media that Lofton was brought in to satisfy the league mandate that an organization must interview at least one “minority” candidate for a vacant head coaching position. Even if that was the case, it’s nice for Lofton, who is now receiving other interview for coaching positions around the league. Always good to see former Bills doing well. 🙂

The Bills have also interviewed special teams coach Bobby April, and just today they are interviewing former Texans coach Dom Capers. Like Jauron, Capers also has 20 years of NFL coaching experience.

It is still very uncertain at this point who the Bills will select as their next head coach, but a decision should be made very soon. Last week, Bills GM Marv Levy was ruled out as a possible candidate. There was great speculation there as well that the 80 year old Hall of Fame coach might return to the side lines where he took the team to four straight Super Bowls from 1990-1993.

The Bills will likely continue to interview possible head coaches over the next week or two, but look for a decision to be announced soon, so that the new head man can begin planning for next season, and assembling his support staff.

Free Agent Signings
The Bills announced the signing of several free agents yesterday (1/19). Most of the players were assigned to the NFL Europe. Several of the players were with the Bills last year on the practice squad. There are no players with significant experience on this list. There are some with impressive college credentials. Fred Jackson was the United Indoor Football league’s MVP last season. But, I’d have to say these are not “major announcements”.

Thurman Thomas among Hall of Fame Finalists
This doesn’t qualify as “this week’s news”, but it’s pretty cool nonetheless. Bills RB Thurman Thomas has made the list of 15 finalists for induction into the NFL Hall of Fame. This is the first year that Thomas is eligible for such an honor. His career with the Bills was outstanding, leading the league in total yards from scrimmage several years in a row and even garnered the MVP award for his performance in the 1991 season.

If ever a rookie entrant were deserving, BBR says Thurman Thomas should be in Canton this summer.
